CHAPTER 7

There was a second knock on the door that was even louder than the first, and it was frightening enough to make Elizabeth jump, though anyone at their door had more to fear from the master and mistress of Pemberley. What scared Elizabeth more was that Darcy seemed to be flustered and she could not remember a single moment in a hundred years when she had seen her husband so shaken.

“Fitz,” she whispered from the doorway of the sitting room. “Will you please tell me what is going on?”

Darcy set the gun to the right of the door so when he opened it, he could reach it quickly if necessary. “It might be nothing, love. Just stay there until we are sure.”

Elizabeth slipped further into the sitting room but peeked around the corner so she could see if anything nefarious was going on. Darcy waited a moment longer, then swung the door open, his posture straight and strong as if he were preparing for a fight. At first, Elizabeth did not see anyone, but then a man stepped from the shadows, and she was a little stunned.

The gentleman was dressed entirely in white, his suit tailored, yet casual, like the aristocrats she saw touring India. He had wind-swept blonde hair and a perfectly groomed beard to match, which gave him the appearance of being handsome. But when Elizabeth locked in on his dark, almost black, eyes… she felt a shiver go down her spine. Then she saw the look of blind hatred on Darcy’s face, which only compounded her dread.

Who was this man and why was he at Pemberley in the middle of the night?

“Are you going to leave me standing on the porch all night, Darcy, or are you going to invite me inside? Then again, unlike you, I do not need the invitation.”

He knows, Elizabeth thought nervously. Vampires could not enter someone’s home without an invitation. The man’s sarcastic question meant he knew about her husband. Did he know about her too?

“You must have quite the imagination if you believe you would ever be invited in this house again, Wickham. I would invite a rabid dog into my home before I let you cross this threshold, you contemptuous, repellant piece of…”

“Fitzwilliam!” Elizabeth chastised from the drawing room. She did not know who this Mr. Wickham was but she would not have her husband starting a bar room brawl in the doorway of their home. The man on the doorstep leaned past Darcy and smiled wickedly at Elizabeth.

“Darcy! Who is this lovely creature? Certainly, you did not convince a young lady to be your bride. I can not imagine putting up with your foul temper for multiple lifetimes.”

Even from the distance, Elizabeth could feel her husband’s rage building.

“Do not even look at her, Wickham, or so help me! I will…”

Wickham chuckled.

“Or what? What will you do to me Darcy? Tell me.”

Elizabeth did not know what was fueling the antagonism between her husband and this Wickham, but she refused to let them come to blows, not in her foyer.
